Coaching

Together, we’ll take your songwriting to the next level and help you write your best songs ever.

Reading the blog, listening to The C.L.I.M.B., reading the books and taking online courses and classes are a great way to learn more about the art, craft, and business of songwriting.  But eventually, you’ll probably need the PERSONAL touch – one-to-one feedback, advice and help reaching your songwriting goals.

I personally want to help you take that next step in your songwriting.  As a professional songwriter, I’ve had my songs recorded by Alan Jackson (the top 5 hit “Monday Morning Church”), Canadian star Gord Bamford (the #1 CCMA Single Of The Year “When Your Lips Are So Close”), Randy Travis, Lady Antebellum, Joe Nichols, and other artists in country, comedy, bluegrass and southern gospel.  I want to use my experience and knowledge to help YOU get where you want to go.

And it doesn’t matter where you live- because these sessions are all over the phone or online!  (When you book your session, you can choose to meet over the phone or on Skype, Google Hangouts, or Zoom.)

  1. I am specifically interested in coaching to help me with idea development. I would like some information on what I can expect from coaching sessions–I am not really sure how you will be able to help me in one brief hour? Thanks in advance for your consideration. My webpage will give you some idea of where I am now.

    1. Hi, Davis. Yes, an hour flies by, no doubt. But there are a few ways we can approach building your idea muscle.

You can bring in a finished song, a song-in-progress, or a title or idea-seed and we’ll work on developing it together. I’ll give you my thoughts on where the idea can go, but more importantly, I’ll share techniques I use to develop my own song ideas. That’s really where the value is- learning how to think about ideas and developing processes to make them as strong as possible.

I’d also be happy to walk you through the idea development process I used on songs of mine that have been recorded by major label artists.

If that sounds like something that would benefit you, let’s set up a session. I’m happy to be of service!

  2. Thanks for the mentoring/coaching session! What an awesome hour for me. I learned a lot and was left with a ton to think about and play around in my head with. The session was very motivating and I’m very grateful for you sharing your knowledge and experiences with me. While I was nervous at first you made all that disappear within 30 seconds. You have the heart of a teacher and I’m happy I found manvsrow! Looking forward to your future mentoring.

    1. Thanks, Matt! I enjoyed our session- you have some good ideas. However, I’m still mad at myself for not thinking of that one title first. Keep up the good work!

  3. Hi, Kris! I don’t have any 1-to-1 spots open right now. When I add a few, I’ll send word out via email and social media to the MvR community. Thanks for your interest!
    God Bless,
    Brent

  4. Your coaching sessions have really paid off. I’ve had amazing pub meetings this week! I’m forever grateful! Thanks Brent.

  5. Hey Brent looking forward to a session or two with you! Last week you mentioned getting your children settled in a bit. Please let me know when’s a good time for you, God Bless, Michael

  6. Hi Brent. How does it work if you work on a song with someone via these skype sessions and it one day becomes a hit? Is your name added as a co-writer? I’m sorry if this seems like a dumb question but trying to navigate this for my 14-yr old daughter who is a singer/songwriter who could probably benefit from some help.

    1. Hi, Judy! Great question. I go into this on the tabs “Coaching Guidelines” and “Coach-Writing Guidelines.” The bottom line is for Coaching, it is NOT a cowrite. I will not actually write a song with you. However, I will give suggestions, feedback, etc. I may suggest “Hey, your 2nd verse needs to go up that mountain right over there.” But you’ll actually have to do the writing yourself. You are free to use any of my suggestions, lines, rhymes, ideas, etc. that I throw out in that session. But it is NOT a cowrite. I will receive zero ownership or credit on the song.

If it is a Coach-Write, I won’t just point out the mountain your 2nd verse needs to climb, I will climb that mountain WITH you. I will be there, writing each line, doing my best to make the song great (in the time scheduled). I will also focus on WHY I think we need to go up that particular path up that particular mountain, but I won’t leave you to climb it yourself. At the end of the session, I MAY or may NOT sign on as a equal cowriter. If I do not, you’re free to use all of my work and suggestions, but I will not get any cowriter credit. However, if I love what we have, I have the choice to add myself as an equal cowriter. And I’ll continue to work on the song “off the clock” for no extra fee. It’ll be a regular cowrite from that point on. I will receive cowriter credit.

So, it’s really up to you how you’d like to proceed. If you want guidance, coaching is the way to go. If you want me to actually get in the dirt and grind out the song line-by-line, then you want a coach-write.

      I hope that helps!

  7. Hi there!

I just signed up for a 15 min. song evaluation. I am primarily a lyricist and I had planned, to send you a song I had in mind, but it does not have music to it. Is this OK, or do you prefer/require music and lyrics?

    Thank you,

    Holly

    1. Hi, Holly!
Yes, you can definitely send in lyrics without melody. I’m totally comfortable with that. Just let me know that it’s “lyric only” on purpose so I don’t have to wonder if you forgot to attach the song file. Thanks!
