Welcome to Wordplay Thursday!
“Scared is __________.”
Here’s a writing prompt for you. It’s a simple fill-in-the-blank. You can use one word or several. Feel free to get as crazy, genre-appropriate, or as imaginative as you want. The point is to get the creative juices flowing. And it’s a good thing to dig deeper, so don’t stop at the first idea that hits you. Try coming up with at least five things- and try to get IMAGERY in at least one of your plays!
“Scared is ________.”
I’ll give you an example to get you started:
“Scared is climbing in an ambulance with your wife.” (I know this from recent personal experience. Thanks again for your prayers. It’s good to be back home!!)
I’d love to hear what you come up with, so please share in the comments. Oh, and please keep your posts below an R-rating. It’s a family show, after all!
Want to play one (or more) of your songs for a real, all-up-in-the-middle-of-the-biz music publisher? I have a great opportunity coming up for you- CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT HOW YOU CAN GET YOUR SONG IN THE EARS OF A MUSIC PUBLISHER!
This month is Adoption August at Songwriting Pro! The short story is that every penny you spend on the Songwriting Pro store (minus the store’s fees) will go towards bringing two orphans home from China. Help yourself become a better songwriter while helping two boys join the Baxter family- how cool is that?

Scared is seeing your checkbook balance after you’ve paid all your bills.
Pulling in to your toddlers daycare with two police cars parked in front of it.
Geez, Cedric… you’re killing me here!
Yeah that happened to me a week ago. Fortunately my kid is fine. It was a case of domestic abuse. My child is now at another school. Defenitely takes your breath away when you drive up to something like that.
Scared is looking at your November ballot.
True story!
“Scared is __________.”
– as scared doesn’t do
– wise, when the risk isn’t warranted by the prize
– Mother Nature’s gut check to be sure of what we might wreck
– for sissies, this ain’t no place for missy prissies, but it ain’t killed anyone yet, so come on with us man, what the heck?
– a feeling, that normally causes us to pause, but quite often it’s drowned out with just a little bit of applause
Scared is that clock on the wall.
That pendulum is swinging so hard it might break.
Those hands are spinning faster every day.
No time to look back, there are only todays.
Grace and love is the meaning of it all.
Scared is……….
thoughts of family, while you’re in the midst of a near death experience yourself
standing in a courtroom, as you’re sentenced to death row
Judgement Day for an unsaved soul
an incurable disease that no one knows
Zika, for a pregnant woman
the feeling of choking on food and nobody around
Scared is everywhere
Scared is…
The sound of a dentist’s drill.
Your choices are Hillary or Donald.
Waiting for the test results.
A 3am phone call from your kid at college
A low growl just outside your tent
Hearing the pilot announce, “Don’t panic folks, but…”
I heard on No Shoes Radio how Chesney says he loves going to the dentist… Just a FYI 😉
He aint right
Scared is losing your only love … a second time.
“Scared is __________.”
-watching her cry as she packs to leave.
-alone in a foxhole.
-a 2am knock on the door with blue lights flashing in the driveway.
-drawing your last breath knowing where you’re headed.
-waking up paralyzed.
“…knowing where you’re headed.” Daaaang…
when you open the fridge door for another beer….only to find Jack Nicholson’ s head in there…sunglasses & all…asking you to turn up the heat…
you’ve just become airborne…you suddenly hear a bottle break…& your flight instructor that’s taking you up for the 1rst time…is starting to slur his words…
to find out the name of the bar that your agent booked you…is actually known as…” The Bucket of Blood ” (enter at your own risk)
having a 69 Mustang suddenly pass you on the freeway & behind the wheel is a chimpanzee grinning at you…mouthing the words to ” Feeling Alright? ”
when you pick up your ”blind date” & it’s plain to see that ” SHE ”…well…just ain’t…ahhhh…what you were looking for…
Kim, you have an amazing imagination! (And I can’t get “Feeling Alright…uh huh”) out of my head. Great song!
Ty
Thanks Ty! My wicked past may have something to with it! Haha!
to ” do ” with it…
2:03 PM.. What’s for lunch tomorrow!!!!?!?!?!? 😉
Scared is finally living your dream, and having it all swept from right under you the very next day.
Scared is rivers on cheeks when no one speaks of the days he’ll never have.
Scared is ….
……getting a call you may lose a loved one, not anyone, the one
……seeing a white light in your dream, asking if it’s time
……being first in line to give a confession of your sins
scared is ;
… fear squared
… hearing the rattle of an unseen snake –in high grass
… losing control of a car– down hill on an ice covered road
… the pull of undertow and a fading beach
Scared is…..
the look in a loved one’s eyes when the disease won’t let them recognize you.
trying to catch yourself as you realize the seat behind you is now missing.
the strong smell of smoke on a crowded plane.
treading salty dark ocean water, with no sight of land in any direction.
being buried alive.
being eaten alive.
Scared is…
…an icy claw gripped around your heart.
…seeing the hospice number on your phone as it rings.
…coming to with no memory of time or place.
…not hearing my newborn’s first cry.
Scared is lightning
Scared is thunder
Scared is that dog of mine
On top of the bed I’m under
Scared is sacred when you scramble it up
Have a beer and swallow that fear
Muster up your stuff
Nice!
Scared is… where the best country on the planet is headed unless we change the spiral and change our ways… Pray for an awakening of change…
Scared is runnin like a bat outa hell…
Cuz TRUTH just walked into the room
Scared is not a strategy
Fear is not an option
Choose Hope & Live Free
Scared is floating downstream
It’s easy to go with the flow
But even the dead fish it seems
Can float with the current, you know?
So Swim, I say, Swim hard!
The effort will be worth the prize
You’re going to the top of the mountain
Scared’s destiny’s a cesspool of flies
Wow, this is fun!! Thanks Brent!
Scared is just a feeling of not knowing where it will end
Scared is anticipation of that pain that you’ll be in
Scared is believing the lies they threaten you with
Scared is drawing yourself back in
Scared is a measure of how much more faith you need to get 🙂
Scared is sitting in the principal’s office as your parents walk in.
Scared is hearing the air hiss out of your life raft .
Scared is the doorknob turning during your teenage makeout session.
Scared is walking in a strange neighborhood when the angry dog breaks his chain.
Scared is a car door that won’t push open underwater.
