Wordplay Thursday #184

Welcome to Wordplay Thursday!

Today, we’re going to try something a little different for your writing prompt- something called “First Line Borrowing.”

Take the first line of a pre-existing song and see where it takes you! Write some lines, or just brainstorm song ideas that could go with that line.

Here’s a line to get you started. Feel free to use it to start off YOUR song, then go back and change the original line up a little bit. After all, other people will be using this one, too!

“She left some tears and a diamond ring…”

I’d love to hear what you come up with, so please share in the comments. Oh, and please keep your posts below an R-rating. It’s a family show, after all!

Wordplay Thursday is a fun way to generate new song ideas- and who doesn’t need more song ideas?  If you’d like MORE “creative kickstarters,” join the Frettie.com community!  In our private Facebook group, I share a handful of creative kickstarters every week.  Plus, there’s plenty more cool stuff for Frettie members!

  1. Good morning Brent,
I like this… here’s my attempt so far:

She left some tears and a diamond ring…
Guess riding shotgun was never her thing
Said she needed space to figure out
What the life she’s been given is really all about

    Will try some more later.
    Thanks.

  2. She left years behind and a diamond ring
    Cause they don’t mean anything
When the one you loved has a fling
An’ a one-night stand wrecks everything

  3. She left a note on his dresser and the diamond ring
It read I never meant to hurt you or to cause you pain
Her heart was racing and shaking as she packed her things
Too afraid to face him feeling blame and shame.

  4. She left some tears and a diamond ring
Guess now our years didn’t mean a thing
Monday would have marked a milestone
    But now I’ll celebrate alone
Just me and a few beers and this damn ring.

  5. I don’t recognize that first line in a pre-existing song. Regardless is has some great images to work with. I may have to go find that song after this writing exercise to make sure I didn’t cross the line of infringement.

She left some tears and a diamond ring
Inside the glass of Tennessee Whiskey
    or
The years of tears she left under a memory
Felt strong when she held that diamond ring

Maybe it was lost and someone returned it to her. Just some organized random thoughts.

    1. Sorry, Romnie- I should’ve been more clear. I made up this particular line (well, I took it from the middle of one of my un-cut songs, actually). So if you do find it somewhere, it’s a coincidence. Thanks for playing!

  6. It’s a love song! ?hahaha

She left some tears and a diamond ring. Like a cryin’ crocodile ’cause it wasn’t enough bling.

She had an appetite for more than my paycheck. I tried to hold her close, but she snapped back at my neck.

I gave her my name and all of my love. She was hungry for something else, and wanted me to give blood.

I was told, “If you love her, then you must set her free.” She got away one day, and caught with Crocodile Dundee.

I was his friend, so it wasn’t that bad. She was made into nice boots for me. He said he didn’t want me to be mad.

I asked him what line he fed her, that made her love his poetry. He said, “The line she left some tears, and a diamond ring.” ?

  7. She left some tears and a dimond ring,
So far off now, I’ll never find her again.
So I just sit by the window,
    Car keys in my hand,
This house is no longer a home,
So maybe I should leave and do the same.

  8. She left some tears & a diamond ring & a big ol’ pair of cutters.
And a note that said “couldn’t get it off, don’t care it was yur mother’s”
“‘Cuz if you can’t buy me one that fits for my very own,
Then boy you can’t afford me, and I’m headed right back home”

  9. She left a tear stained wedding dress
Not a word and not a note
I knew we had troubles, fixable I thought
But with that ring, lonely is all I bought

  10. -She left some tears and a diamond ring.
Just a rock in salty water,
    waitin’ for a good fling.
    -Or maybe a sharp cutter,
and water to wash away the past.
I could cut this blown, cracked heart,
heated, spun and made of fragile glass.
