Welcome to Wordplay Thursday!
Today, we’re going to try something for your writing prompt called “First Line Borrowing.”
Take the first line of a pre-existing song (one off the radio or an album) and see where it takes you! Write some lines, or just brainstorm song ideas that could go with that line.
Here’s a line to get you started. Feel free to use it to start off YOUR song, then go back and change the original line up a little bit. After all, other people will be using this one, too!
“It was just a note, a piece of paper by the door…”
I’d love to hear what you come up with, so please share in the comments. Oh, and please keep your posts below an R-rating. It’s a family show, after all!
Wordplay Thursday is a fun way to generate new song ideas- and who doesn’t need more song ideas? If you’d like MORE “creative kickstarters,” join the Frettie.com community today! In our private Facebook group, I share a handful of creative kickstarters every week. Plus, there’s plenty more cool stuff for Frettie members!

It was just a note, a piece of paper by the door
No it didn’t say I don’t love you anymore
There in red ink the words wash the dishes and sweep the floor before your butt walks out this door
-It was just a note, a piece of paper by the door.
-Like a thin layer of cut skin, from the quick slash of paper’s sword.
-It was painful to look at, with sharp aches deeper than the sore.
-To cover it only hides the hurt, and my angry hunger wants it torn.
-Flapping in the breeze it’s unbelievable, a feeble statement without a solid core.
-I look away to hide a tear, ’cause the sweet, lingering smell and holy visions I adore.
-A nervous hand with shaky hope grips the knob, to even up the score.
-The lock rattles with laughing clicks and clacks. The paper reads, “Doughnuts sold out this morn.”
Brilliant and insightful!
Oh, I don’t know about that,…….just PAINFULLY HUNGRY. -haha! Thanks Brett!
It was just a note, a piece of paper by the door
Like a river flows and keeps on crawling to this walls
As my heavy heart sails from the shore
It keeps me warm, the way it goes
it was just a note, apiece of paper by the door
It didn’t say I love you, didn’t say anymore
it didn’t say i’m leavin, didn’t have to, i’m sure
and there anit no need to mention,
I’ve seen this note before.
Like the time you went to Mama’s
or the time to the Jersey shore
or the time you left with Elvis
and they’ve been many more.
I’m so tired of reading, I don’t read them anymore.
So, go on, make it happen.
I’m gonna look out that open door
see the world around me
and one thing you can be sure
I aint gonna read no letters
left lying on some bedroom floor.
Dee, this is great! Good structure, lots of detail. Keep it up!
Gone
A scrap of paper, neatly folded by the door
A few lines to me, old fights and nothing more
She’ll be back again, and I’ll say sorry then
I’ll hold her in my arms just like before
She was gone
Gone with the wind, tired of fightin, tired of men
But thinks back to the way we use to be
I’m gone for her,
and she’s,
still gone for me
