Here’s a writing prompt for you. It’s a simple fill-in-the-blank. You can use one word or several. Feel free to get as crazy, genre-appropriate, or as imaginative as you want. The point is to get the creative juices flowing. And it’s a good thing to dig deeper, so don’t stop at the first idea that hits you. Try coming up with at least five things.
“I’m as lonely as _____________________.”
I’ll give you one example to get you started:
“I’m as lonely as one drumstick.”
I’d love to hear what you come up with, so please share in the comments. Oh, and please keep your posts below an R-rating. It’s a family show, after all!
SHOUT OUT!
Thanks to Patrick Beck, Steve, and mcswervy for their great additions to Wordplay Thursday #4 (read it here)! Great job!

A white crayon, the only one left in the box. The 3rd Songwriter during a co write with Rivers Rutherford and Craig Wiseman. One penny in the couch cushions. The guy whose parents thought Faith (Perry) Hill wasn’t good enough for him (OUCH). A lyricist “writing” with Brent Baxter, Bernie Taupin and Harry Chapin. Goodnight.
I’m lonely as…
a shoelace with no shoe
lint with no bellybutton
a-one a-spicy a-meatball sittin’ on a plate-ah (<–italian accent)
as a deserted island without a castaway.
As….
A one man battle of the bands
A rusty playground
The bottom of the bottle
My last cigarette
Detention in the summertime
A one man staring contest
“I’m as loney as…
…a single white rose waiting patiently to be picked,
that email you’ve been antisipating and never receive,
my honey’s cell phone resting on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean,
I’m sitting on the pitcher’s mound in a empty Fenway Park.
….as a horseless cowboy.
….as a porcupine at a balloon convention.
….as a bachelor’s ironing board.
….as a sundial repairman.
….as when I heard you were engaged.
Great stuff! “A porcupine at a balloon convention???” What’d you put in your Wheaties this morning?
as Wordplay Thursday #6.
Ooh, fun!
I’m as lonely as…
… the single dahlia poking its head up through the winter snow, wondering if it is safe to wake up again.
… the rooster cawing, the only thing awake to hear the symphony of dawn.
… the dull, rusted dime at the bottom of the gutter.
… the dog left on the side of the road, its belly full of tiny life ands its eyes full of hopeless despair.
… the letter sitting, ever sealed, at the bottom of your wastebasket as a single girl waits by the mailbox for eternity.

I’m as lonely as, the last bite on a dinner plate
I’m as lonely as, a rowboat in the pacific
I’m as lonely as the guitar pick tossed into the crowd
I’m as lonely as a Penney, dropped and rolled to the curb
