Welcome to Wordplay Thursday!
“Country music is __________.”
Here’s a writing prompt for you. It’s a simple fill-in-the-blank. You can use one word or several. Feel free to get as crazy, genre-appropriate, or as imaginative as you want. The point is to get the creative juices flowing. And it’s a good thing to dig deeper, so don’t stop at the first idea that hits you. Try coming up with at least five things- and try to get IMAGERY in at least one of your plays!
“Country music is ________.”
I’ll give you an example to get you started:
“Country music is whiskey wisdom twanging through a dusty dashboard speaker.”
I’d love to hear what you come up with, so please share in the comments. Oh, and please keep your posts below an R-rating. It’s a family show, after all!

Country music is a fiddle and a bow
Sawing out a living down on Music Row
Country music is a sad song with the chime of the steel
Three chords and the truth just keeping it real
Country music is the rowdy son of a Gospel mother
Who’s daddy sang the blues and rock and roll claimed his brother
Red is the color of country music
Cause country music is running through my veins
You got good ones here Neal!
Thank you Kim!
Nice lines. Very vivid.
Country music is…….
– the sound of a blue farm just before it turns gray, as callused hands fold in prayer and the dirt screams for rain.
– when the neon lit Saturday night makes the wooden pew hurt, while Kris and Johnny sit next to me, who warned the Devil flirts.
– a slow dance on the back porch while the sun sinks below, out where you pray that the static not interrupt your show.
– the pop and crackle of the of biggest flames, as friends in low places circle, turn it up, and sing out for fame.
– a yellow brick road where the Wicked Witch is dead, and a band searchin’ for Oz while munchkins dance in their heads.
Country music is-
-the universal language of fans toe tapping, lifting beers and singing wrong words loudly.
-open heart surgery of one’s soul, bypassing life’s problems and giving new breath to forgotten memories.
-the back road to lost love.
– sitting on the front porch swing on a warm fall evening watching the sun introduce the moon.
Chorus: “Country music’s just a feelin’ that grows down in your soul. It’s songs of Driftin’ Cowboys and early rock n’ roll. It’s whiskey, work and wages, goodtime gals and beer. Country music’s just the songs I love to hear.
It’s songs about the workin’ man and folks down on their luck. Songs of always movin’ on and the ones who drive them trucks. It’s lovin’ and losin’ someone close; and singin’ how you feel. In plain and simple language. And every song is real..” (C) M. Thompson 2016.
There’s more. But this is just a few lines.
I like it!
Thanks Neal! Glad you like it. I appreciate the kind reply.

Me too!
Country music … stirs the whiskey and the morning regrets
Country music is..
.. weary hands wrapped around gentle thoughts
.. a generations’ anthem
.. moments of good times during hard times … a maker of forever times
.. an American original.. an international echo
.. takes me to another place , sometimes familiar, sometimes not –with a chorus that spends the day.
Country music is……
– a drop D tuner thrown for a boot-stompin’ low, and a chicken peckin’ on the strings next to a banjo that likes to roll.
– the lush thick notes of Patsy bringin’ ’em home, while Willie’s on the bus writing crazy all alone.
country music is
– a cloud of dust off a dirt road
– a sundown coming to life
– a can of worms waiting for a hook
– an inspiration what will never die
Country Music is –
– the soundtrack of sanity in my head, rushing through my veins, hot n red
– warm and pulsing through my veins, its the soundtrack of life that keeps me sane
– a hell yeah and a hallelujah
Country music comes from pickups, steers and corn,
Where yellowed calluses were born.
Love that you went the extra step and said “yellowed” calluses- I could really see it!
a hard drink of whisky and a soft spoken women
a sunny day down by the creek and a thunder storm a commin
“Country music is ________.”
…dreams spillin’ from a 12 ounce glass
and country boys and girls just knockin’ ‘em back
…rising with the blistering sun,
and workin’ til another day’s sweat is gone
…strumming and humming along,
the words perched on the tip of a songwriter’s tongue
…the Gospel truth and sinnin’
having a heart-to-heart
…blasting out another dashboard smash,
rockin’ my jukebox on wheels
…a dust-up between sinner and saint,
and dueling banjos sealing their fate
