Welcome to Wordplay Thursday!
“Fathers are __________ and sons are __________.”
Here’s a writing prompt for you. It’s a simple fill-in-the-blank. You can use one word or several. Feel free to get as crazy, genre-appropriate, or as imaginative as you want. The point is to get the creative juices flowing. And it’s a good thing to dig deeper, so don’t stop at the first idea that hits you. Try coming up with at least five things- and try to get IMAGERY in at least one of your plays!
“Fathers are __________ and sons are ___________.”
I’ll give you an example to get you started:
“Fathers are two-legged jungle gyms and sons are piggie-back cowboys.”
I’d love to hear what you come up with, so please share in the comments. Oh, and please keep your posts below an R-rating. It’s a family show, after all!
Wordplay Thursday is a fun way to generate new song ideas- and who doesn’t need more song ideas? If you’d like an inside look at the techniques I use to find song idea after song idea- ideas that YOU can use, too- I have just thing for you!

Good morning Brent,
Enjoying Wordplay Thursday’s! Here is my go so far…
Fathers are the fishing net and sons the wind you’re trying to catch.
Have a great day 🙂
Fathers are monkey see and sons are monkey do.
Fathers are the original document and sons are the carbon copy.
Fathers are the lighthouse and sons are the ship.
Hi Ty,
” Fathers are the original document and sons are the carbon copy ”
Great line! Great metaphor.
Fathers Are Sons
And Sons Are Fathers.
Fathers are an old crutch back behind the broom in the closet, and sons are livin’ on the dangerous edge of bang-ups, bruises and causes.
Fathers are the good tread left on the old shoe of life, and sons are walking through the mud ‘n muck on a path with no cut-throughs in sight.
Fathers are in the shadows and only come out when the bullets fly, and sons are dodging what’s fired at them with hands held to the sky.
Fathers are the battle scared pack leaders constantly on the prowl, and sons are nippin’ at their heels, then tend to scatter when not corralled.
Fathers are a good cool drink in a game with no timeouts, and sons are big shot, superstar players dying from thirst with dry sticky mouths.
Fathers are unintentional reality stars with lessons to watch and learn, and sons are skeptical spectators who groan and grumble at every turn.
Fathers are pom-pom shakin’, Cub Scout makin’, lzod belt wearin’ fools, and sons are fast-runnin’ trains, slick trucks with flames, and have to be reminded they’re not really that cool.
Fathers are the rock, and sons are the moss.
Fathers Have Held Thier Own.
In A World Made Of Stone.
Sons Have Spent Their Lives
Looking. For. Adivce.
Fathers are proud and sons are encouraged.
Fathers are the brutality of reality, meant to lead so the family thrives, and sons are wild seeds being sown that keep the father vicariously alive.
…fathers are the road and sons are hitchhikin’
…fathers are oak and sons are the breeze
…fathers are the knee and sons are the bounce
…fathers are sacrifice for the sake of the team, and sons are the hope for unfulfilled dreams
…fathers are mountains of battle-scarred wisdom and sons are at base camp, tryin’ to reach the peak
Fathers Are Soilders Leading The Battle.
Sons Are Content in The Shadows.
Fathers are fools and sons are even bigger fools.
Fathers are known to be ” know it alls ” & sons take that to a whole new different level.
Fathers are & can be tight with their money & sons are constantly trying to loosen their fathers grip on the ” Ebenezer Scrooge School Of Finance.”
Fathers are & can be very vocal at baseball games & sons wish they would just shut the f… up!
Fathers are flawed but all & all are loving & do the best they can & sons even though they at times won’t admit it…know this & love their fathers dearly!
“Fathers are oak trees & sons are acorns.”
“Fathers are today & sons are tomorrow.”
“Fathers are the way it was & sons are the way it’s gonna be.”
“Fathers are teachers & sons are students.”
“Fathers are the devil in disguise & sons are angels in their eyes.”
“Fathers are big, tough & strong & sons give us reason to carry on.”
“Fathers are oceans, deep & wide & sons are puddles from the tears they cried.”
I didn’t see your fathers as teachers. You & I were on the same track on that one 🙂
Fathers Are Like Ships Tossed At Sea
Sons Are The Particles In The Ocean Reef
Fathers are
Misunderstood,
As they hover like radar.
But, a father’s job is to raise his son,
To grow up as they should.
And sons are,
A father’s pride,
All others viewed subpar,
No matter how the future unfolds,
A father’s love will never die.
Only when,
The son of a son,
Can begin to comprehend,
The full depth of a father’s love,
Is when he, too, has one.
“Fathers are the teachers and sons are their believers
No matter what they teach, it’s always learned…”
“One way or another, a reflection of the other
A lookalike or an opposite shines through…”
