Wordplay Thursday #114

Wordplay Thursday

Welcome to Wordplay Thursday!

Here’s a writing prompt for you. It’s a simple fill-in-the-blank. You can use one word or several. Feel free to get as crazy, genre-appropriate, or as imaginative as you want. The point is to get the creative juices flowing. And it’s a good thing to dig deeper, so don’t stop at the first idea that hits you. Try coming up with at least five things.

“She drank down her morning coffee like _____.”

I’ll give you an example to get you started:

“She drank down her morning coffee like it was holy salvation.”

Wordplay Thursday

I’d love to hear what you come up with, so please share in the comments. Oh, and please keep your posts below an R-rating. It’s a family show, after all!

And thanks to Matt Martoccio, Danny Bean, Donna King, Ken Matthiessen, Jeff Green, Debbie Convoy, Nick S, Brenda Karl, Kim Kondrashoff, Stacy Marriner, Michael Klenda, Christine, Joe Slyzelia and everyone else for your great additions to Wordplay Thursday #113 (read it here)! Great job!

  1. She drank down her morning coffee like…

    1-Daylight
2-She sucked down her beer the night before
3-Like she was Rocky knocking back a tall glass of raw eggs
3-Pausing for those few moments of silent caffination would right the wrongs she was planning
3-Growing up she had watched her father do

  2. She drank down her morning coffee like——
    – it would be her last.
    – every morning before.
    – it was fine champagne.
    – a baby and its bottle.
    – tequila shots at a bar.

  3. “She drank down her morning coffee like it was brewed from the fountain of youth.”

“She drank down her morning coffee like the cure was at the bottom of the cup.”

“She drank down her morning coffee like she drank the bottle of wine last night.”

“She drank down her morning coffee like all of humanity depended on it.”

“She drank down her morning coffee like it was bottled up joy.”

  4. “She drank down her morning coffee like _____.”

    Tequila on a Saturday night
September rain falls from the sky
    Her regrets from the past

At work on break so not a lot of time. Will come back with more.

  5. She drank down her morning coffee like……….
    …she was Linda Lovelace. LOL.
…the price of coffee was cheaper than monster.
…her boss be yelling at her.
    …the cup was bottomless.
…she was the next victim of the office coffee police.

  6. She drank down her morning coffee like….
    She was a sink hole
    The desert drinks rain
A whiskey starved sailor on 24 hour leave
    It was salvation
It was the last cup of coffee

An elephant at a water hole.

  7. She drank her morning coffee like…
    …a grail of harsh regret
…it held the answer to her abandoned heart’s desire.
…each taste might salve the pain.
    …it would deliver vindication
…it was all she needed though she knew that wasn’t so
    …a tonic for last night

  8. like a blinking battery on a charger

like sipping fine wine while she twiddled with her shoe

she drinks it every morning, with prayerful thanks and closed eyes

hot Ramen soup, in little sips followed by petite winces

a cat lapping up spilled milk. I can just imagine seeing her whiskers with milk drops giving witness

  9. Ideas from the “million monkeys on a million typewriters” school of songwriting, followed by a draft verse/chorus of a song entitled “Bullseye” based on one of the ideas:

She drank down her morning coffee like:
    – it was liquid salvation (variation on Brent’s)
    – it was a lifeline in a stormy sea
    – it was going out of style
    – a woman with somewhere to be/go
    – it tasted heavenly
    – she needed something stiffer
    – the condemned’s last meal
    – Socrates did his hemlock (admittedly unusual phrase for a country song)
    – she was headed to the gallows
    – she’d won the lottery
    – nothing else mattered
    – it savored of steer manure
    – she lacked pure caffeine inspiration
    – the drowning grasps the lifeline
    – she needed caffeine grace
    – one chilled to the bone
    – a woman on a mission
    – she hadn’t slept in weeks
    – a lost soul in a trance
    – she needed something stronger
    – a chill was in her bones/soul
    – it was all the hope she had
    – she had nowhere to go/be
    – the devil had brewed the stuff
    – like the bitter brew it was
    – the devil was at her heels
    – the hounds were at her heels
    – she’d nothing left to give
    – she’d lost her only love
    – it was all that she had left
    – he hadn’t said a word
    – he hadn’t said goodbye

    BULLSEYE
    ——–

    VERSE #1:
    She sipped her morning coffee
like he hadn’t said a word,
the tears that stained her yellowed blouse
    fell silent and unheard.

The peeling door hid him from sight
as she sank into her car,
but loud and clear she still could hear
    his pointed poisoned darts.

    CHOROUS:
    Bullseye on her hurting heart
he’d scored, but ’twas no game,
a bullseye on her wounded heart
    he never felt ashamed.

The one he swore to love instead
    was the constant target red
of his acid tongue, his cowardly ire
ready ever to aim and fire –
    bullseye.

  10. …like she had trekked through the desert.

    …like she wanted to drown.

…like it was last call at the bar.

    …like it was liquid gold.

…like it was the answer to her prayers.

  11. She drank down her morning coffee like…
the bottom of the cup was about to fall out.
someone who’d lost their taste buds to hot pizza last night.
her belly was a fire that needed extinguishing.
a girl who takes full advantage of free refills.
    a 21-yr-old with a shot of jaeger.

  12. She drank her morning coffee
like sand through the glass of time
She didn’t notice it slipping till
the last bit crossed her mind
It started out so sweet but
by the end a bitter grind
    She can’t see now
    or remember how
    she chose to wander blind
