Wordplay Thursday #160

Wordplay Thursday

Welcome to Wordplay Thursday!

“Halloween is __________.”

Here’s a writing prompt for you. It’s a simple fill-in-the-blank. You can use one word or several. Feel free to get as crazy, genre-appropriate, or as imaginative as you want. The point is to get the creative juices flowing. And it’s a good thing to dig deeper, so don’t stop at the first idea that hits you. Try coming up with at least five things- and try to get IMAGERY in at least one of your plays!

“Halloween is ________.”

I’ll give you an example to get you started:

“Halloween is the rustle of wrappers as a 5-year-old, wide-eyed Ninja Turtle dumps his bag of neighborhood candy onto the living room carpet.”

Wordplay Thursday

I’d love to hear what you come up with, so please share in the comments. Oh, and please keep your posts below an R-rating. It’s a family show, after all!

  1. Halloween, is a time of make believe
When we can be the movers in our dreams
If only for a day…Only once a year
You get to feel like what you wear

    ar
You feel like you are what you wear

    1. Halloween, is a time of make believe
When you get to play the movers in your dreams
If only for a day…Only once a year
For a moment, you are what you wear

  2. Holloween is a bundle of joy when you see the tiny creatures roaming the earth once a year, bringing tidings of boo spirits to all who answers the sqeeky door all wrapped in goblin webs of surgar coated tarts sticky to leave candy streeks all over costumes of the scariest creature of them all. My fovorite goblin of them all is the invisable ghost that shares his candy till all the candy is gone.

    Trick or treat.
    Mr Boo.

  3. Halloween is……..

-the search for the perfect fruit in which to carve an imperfect face, leaving dirty knives and a gut of seeds behind, now a candle-lit, smiling shell in it’s place.

-where the dark of night is now lit by jack-o-lantern light, and the pathways to a sweet candy treat are covered with spirits in costume all attempting to trick as they greet.

-a prank on a lawn by who we’ll never know, with ghostly streams of white from the trees dancing in laughter as the wind blows.

-that pretty little shining face hidden by the dreadful, scary mask on top, who continues on to the next house because their greed for treats won’t stop.

  4. Halloween is…
    – a grand gala for goblins, ghouls and ghosts
    – a cinnamon scent of pumpkin spice
    – witch watching, dracula dissing, frankenstein following and mummy missing
    – a haunted house of candy sweets, you take the tricks and I will take the treats
    – the day of masquerading as monsters, collecting cauldrons of candy.

  5. Halloween is nervously sitting in the car with your mom in your Catholic School parking lot, dressed as a Ninja Turtle (with your school uniform in your back pack, just in case ) anxiously waiting for someone else to arrive at school dressed in a costume!!

  6. Halloween is…
always curiously windy, bone chilling cold and dismally gray, as if the dead know what day it is.

    Halloween is…
a mixed bag of odd traditions,
*contradicting what we say to our small children the other 364 days of the year and letting them collect candy form strangers.
*a day that girls dress up in as little as possible in the freezing cold.
*an excuse to gorge on sugar and have to peel our little ones off the ceiling from the sweet treat overload high.
*streamers of toilet paper strewn from the trees and decorating the yard and house.

    Halloween is…
painting a ghoulish face, dressing in a creepy costume and feeling like a kid again.

    Halloween is…
another alcohol enduser like the Super Bowl and New Years Eve.

    Halloween is…
OMG! I hope we don’t see any CREEPY CLOWNS. (I hate clowns!!)

  7. Halloween is a special time of year
When we celebrate our monster fear
I dress up in strips from an old bed sheet
I’m the Mummy again , walking the street
We couldn’t afford a store bought rig
with the plastic mask and the phony wig
But the best part makes it my favorite time…
All the candy I collect…. I can call mine.

  8. …for adults…the movie… The Shining with Jack Nicholson, axe in hand with that maniacal grin of his…saying, ” Here’s Johnny!!! ”

…when Taylor didn’t feel so swift when everybody came dressed as her.

is the sound & sight of multi colored Roman Candle, exploding, lighting up a sky that is dark as black velvet….

& looking up toward the sky are the lit up faces of little cowboys, nurses, goblins, pirates, witches & skeletons…all in unison…shrieking with the utmost delight!!

is when Fred Sanford says : I brought you somethin’ too, Esther.

Aunt Esther: Why, that’s nothing but a clear piece of plastic.

Fred Sanford: No, it ain’t. Put it up to your face. That’s your Hallowe’en mask.

  9. “Halloween is __________.”

a trick to treat the devil stirrin’ inside
and a little tremblin’ at the creepy sounds and sights
    It’s a scream and a holler
    in the dead of night
    It’s skeletons in the closet
    finally coming to life
    but it’s not as scary
    as my first three marriages

(ok, I made that last part up)

    1. but it’s not as scary
      as my first three marriages

(ok, I made that last part up) Ah..ha ha ha ha!! Good one Joe!

  10. is the sound & sight of a multi colored Roman Candle, exploding into the night, lighting up a black velvet sky, radiating a sheen so bright & spectacular….

lighting up the faces of excited little cowboys, nurses, goblins, pirates, witches & skeletons…all in unison… with pointed fingers shrieking with the utmost delight!!

  11. Halloween is….

….Ghosts and princesses waltzing down the street desiring dainty delights.

….crisp autumn air filled with creatures galore
    gallivanting toward my front door.

    ….mischievous evil and petty pranks,
    delivered without nary a “thanks.”

    ….indian corn and pumpkins aglow,
time for autumn to put on a show.

    ….
