“Heartache is __________.”
Here’s a writing prompt for you. It’s a simple fill-in-the-blank. You can use one word or several. Feel free to get as crazy, genre-appropriate, or as imaginative as you want. The point is to get the creative juices flowing. And it’s a good thing to dig deeper, so don’t stop at the first idea that hits you. “Heartache is ___________.”
I’ll give you an example to get you started:
“Heartache is a chest full of broken glass.
I’d love to hear what you come up with, so please share in the comments. Oh, and please keep your posts below an R-rating. It’s a family show, after all!

Once Shattered.But No Longer Last.
[Heartache is…]
rough, but you can overcome it
buried in the past, I know it’s hard to believe
deep in the waters of the big blue ocean deep
not gonna be the last beat of (my, your) life
Heartache is looking through a nursing home window
Heartache is accepting Jack Daniel’s offer
Heartache is an old car seat that still smells brand new
Heartache is drifting towards the walls on the slow songs
Heartache is wrapped in a flag with three sides
The old car seat that still smells brand new…That one really stood out to me when I read through these!
Heartache….
a memory that makes it hard to breathe ….
a twenty-one gun salute …
you, walkin’ away…
dancin’ with my daughter on her wedding day …
wakin’ up with nobody on your side of the bed …
Heartache is bliss on the prairie
As thunder is rolling away
A tune-full of treasure
Her memory drifts into day
Heartache is………….
tug-o-war between the breakdown and good to go, where strings of the heart are threadbare and unraveled deep down in soul.
Heartache is just a heart beat away
Heartache is pain with a pulse
Heartache is red apple poison
Heartache is knowing someone will never feel the same way about you that you do about them.
… is losing your true friend when you are advised by the vet to ” put him down” and you look into his trusting eyes for the last time.
… is watching your precious child cry due to classroom social rejection
… opening up the anticipated letter from you favored college.. only to find your rejection
… when on your knee looking for a ” yes” and she answers “no” .
I THOUGHT HEARTACHE IS HEARING, “I NO LONGER LOVE YOU.”
TILL I HEARD MORE OF WHAT YOU HAD TO SAY,
“MY HEART HAS FALLEN FOR YOUR BEST FRIEND, STU,
AND WE’RE GOING AWAY… IN FACT WE’RE LEAVING TODAY!”
Thank you Brent. Why is it so easy to write about heartache?!
Heartache is pain so deep, you feel like you’re in space
Heartache is loving someone, then no longer seeing their face
Heartache is a tomb with a short date span listed on the copper stone
Heartache is looking from the street at a space you once called home
