Welcome to Wordplay Thursday!

“Family is _____.”

Here’s a writing prompt for you. It’s a simple fill-in-the-blank. You can use one word or several. Feel free to get as crazy, genre-appropriate, or as imaginative as you want. The point is to get the creative juices flowing. And it’s a good thing to dig deeper, so don’t stop at the first idea that hits you. Try coming up with at least five things.

And try to get at least ONE IMAGE in at least one of your plays.

“Family is UNO at the kitchen table on a Tuesday night.

    – Grandma’s house filled to capacity, music in the living room, food cooking in the kitchen and kids running around the farm.

    – Everyone hanging out telling stories on the farm under the giant oaks after a loved one’s funeral

    – getting all gussied up to go sit together at church and celebrate the birth of our savior

    – forgetting for a little while whatever you thought needed to get done to help out with the harvest and get the bounty in before the storm arrives

    – friends always ready to lend a hand and help, or an ear to hear you out without judgement

    1. Well getting in early has it’s priveleges (We get all the comments instead of feeling like we need to read them all before writing ours 🙂 )

    The home fire burnin that leads you home when you’ve lost your way

    – Sunday school, Sunday sermon and Sunday fried chicken.
    – reunions and rememberances.
    – country cousins and city kids.
    – a grandmother’s smile, while looking at her creations.
    – first friends, fall fun and funerals.

    Th cheering section in the bleachers as you turn and smile in your navy blue cap and gown.

    The peanut butter and jelly between God and Country.

    memories like this, my mind loves to steal

    Family is the gift chosen for us by God

    Reunion.
    Everyone at GrandMa’s on holidays.

  10. Family is a Holy Bible filled with underlined scriptures …. wedding pictures…newspaper clippings, tear stains and dried funeral lilies … full names and dates written in the front … memorializing each one of us … getting saved and baptized at The Church of Christ…

    Family is blood whether it’s good or bad…it’s still blood.

    Family is as complex as honours math…which I’m still trying to comprehend…
