Welcome to Wordplay Thursday!
“Family is _____.”
Here’s a writing prompt for you. It’s a simple fill-in-the-blank. You can use one word or several. Feel free to get as crazy, genre-appropriate, or as imaginative as you want. The point is to get the creative juices flowing. And it’s a good thing to dig deeper, so don’t stop at the first idea that hits you. Try coming up with at least five things.
And try to get at least ONE IMAGE in at least one of your plays.
“Family is _____.”
I’ll give you an example to get you started:
“Family is UNO at the kitchen table on a Tuesday night.”

Family is a rope that helps mend a split tree back together.
Family is ___
– Grandma’s house filled to capacity, music in the living room, food cooking in the kitchen and kids running around the farm.
– Everyone hanging out telling stories on the farm under the giant oaks after a loved one’s funeral
– getting all gussied up to go sit together at church and celebrate the birth of our savior
– forgetting for a little while whatever you thought needed to get done to help out with the harvest and get the bounty in before the storm arrives
– friends always ready to lend a hand and help, or an ear to hear you out without judgement

– a grandmother’s smile, while looking at her creations.

Th cheering section in the bleachers as you turn and smile in your navy blue cap and gown.
The peanut butter and jelly between God and Country.
Family is coming to your side when no one else will.
Mama cooking biscuits in the kitchen
smell of bacon frying in the pan
Daddy says the blessing for the meal
memories like this, my mind loves to steal
Family is true unconditional love
Family is the gift chosen for us by God
Family is shelter from life’s storms
Family is in the reflection in the mirror
Family is a blessing not everyone has
Together you make memories, the good and the bad
Family is singing sweet amazing grace
While not afraid to show the tears streaks on your face
Family is knowing there’s someone who will care
They tell you to keep trying and lift you up in prayer
That’s almost a chorus there!

Family is a Holy Bible filled with underlined scriptures …. wedding pictures…newspaper clippings, tear stains and dried funeral lilies … full names and dates written in the front … memorializing each one of us … getting saved and baptized at The Church of Christ…
-Family is loading up the old station wagon for another summer vacation
-Family is that warm feeling you get when you see your kids running to greet you at the end of long work day
-Family is always there, when the rest of the world isn’t
