Wordplay Thursday

Welcome to Wordplay Thursday!

“City is _____.”

Here’s a writing prompt for you. It’s a simple fill-in-the-blank. You can use one word or several. Feel free to get as crazy, genre-appropriate, or as imaginative as you want. The point is to get the creative juices flowing. And it’s a good thing to dig deeper, so don’t stop at the first idea that hits you. Try coming up with at least five things.

And try to get IMAGERY in at least one of your plays.

“City is _____.”

I’ll give you an example to get you started:

“City is a $10 pay-to-park receipt on your dashboard.

    City is _______?
    – overrated
    – gnawing away at the countryside.
    – one of those 4 letter words.
    – just hurry up and wait.
    – blazing blacktop, toiling traffic, and like minded denizens copying other citizens.

A concrete and steel jungle for autonomy
A melting pot of dreams from the driven
A pothole, a curse word, and crime to keep livin’
City is made to give and take from you
A dollar in my pocket that I can turn into two
A squeel of tires from a feeling of haste
A deadlock in traffic, with horns in my face
City is a marching band and big parade
A holiday decoration that tax payers paid

    City is alive and well-
City is all about the broken-

  7. faceless beggars with tattered clothes and hard leather skin.
creeping cars with mindless robots holding cell phones.
boxes on wheels with kids asking are we there yet.
towering stone and steel prisons that lock you up 9 to 5.
a hot river of concrete that funnels you into a sea of chaos.
sirens in the night, bright neon lights and people laughing at Starbucks and texting selfies.

  8. City is..
Like a double shot of espresso, energizing you instantly, feeling excited and bouncing from place to place. Then wearing off quickly and all at once, as if it was all too much, too fast. Temporary and fleeting adrenaline has left you longing to return home for a nap.

  9. City is garbage pick up in the middle of the night
City is a story of stalled traffic and snarled dreams
City is hope for the hopeless
City is a nightmare for country values
City is alive with dark roast caffeine energy

City is a bedlam of heat, exhaust, sirens, jackhammers, detours & road construction….followed a very long slow moving line of cars… filled with hot, tired, angry workers…just trying to get the hell home…

City is just a smoke & mirrors shell game…in the end…will rob you of your soul & peace of mind…

City is very fast, very hard, very competitive & if you don’t adapt…you won’t survive…

City is an exciting place for the young feller who just fell off the cabbage truck.

City is just one single block that separates extreme affluence & wealth from crippling destitution & poverty.

  11. City is…
A sailor returning home after the war, passionately grabbing and kissing a nurse he didn’t know in time square during a celebration of thousands. A moment caught by a Life magazine photographer that will forever be etched in our history. In her words the picture says so many things, hope, love, peace and tomorrow.

    City…
Ferris Bueller on a float in a parade down Dearborn Street in Chicago, singing twist and shout.

  12. City is…….
being blessed with a great retirement.
    Angels in the alleys.
    living close to the shore.
being blessed with an Appeals Hearing giving me back my job!
a cool artist and street scene at night.
    Civil Service.
    not so bad after all.

“City is a neon, come-alive Music City night, when the sun sets behind the Tennesee hills…”

  14. City is : Herds of people, in a clashing direction , on a narrow road called a sidewalk
The call of the taxi … they use their horn for communication
Fragrance : .. sweet clouds of unknown air from unknown restaurants; stale air from empty allies; exhaust fumes from traffic and subways …. different, challenging .. exciting

  15. City is a variety of entertaining thoughts
    City is 36.1627° N, 86.7816° W
City is music to my ears

  16. City is_____

    …a country wannabe

    ….a series of spotlight memories

    ….life at lightnin’ speed

….where I let my youth run free, wearin’ out the pavement ‘neath my feet

…where I’m barely skyscrapin’ by, tryin’ to take a stab at the big time

  17. City is, awakening with a warmth of the sun, unveiled to everyone. Each day she faces all mankind has done. City is old and tired, we’ve broken all her bones, I guess a time will come when the abuse can’t be undone. I try hard to understand how today so many hearts are stone.

  18. City is a concrete congregation where the traffic crawls and the minutes race away.
City is the smell of a delicious restaurant followed by rancid alleyway garbage within 3 steps.
City is an electric church with an enormous collection plate.
City is a grinding symphony of counter melodies without rests.
City is the special sauce that can make any leftovers taste better.
