Welcome to Wordplay Thursday!
“Nervous is ________.”
Here’s a writing prompt for you. It’s a simple fill-in-the-blank. You can use one word or several. Feel free to get as crazy, genre-appropriate, or as imaginative as you want. The point is to get the creative juices flowing. And it’s a good thing to dig deeper, so don’t stop at the first idea that hits you. Try coming up with at least five things.
And try to get IMAGERY in at least one of your plays.
“Nervous is __________.”
I’ll give you an example to get you started:
“Nervous is the taste of fingernails.”

– sometimes like nitrous for the soul but can make a body prematurely grow old
– often a beneficial warning system
– perspiring up a storm, even when it’s freezing cold,
– talking fast and loud, because you don’t like crowds
– heart racing, palms sweating, second guessing on which horse your over betting
“Nervous is ________.”
…tip-toeing out the door, and her daddy’s standing in the hallway
…a racing mind that doesn’t see the checkered flag
…the night before the day she says ‘I do’
…when she’s late again, and her Papa said he’d kill that man
…when your heart won’t play pretend anymore
…a cat in the ninth inning of the game
Nervous is:
-a boy fourteen alone with the pretty girl with freckles.
-the gas gauge touching the line and twenty miles to go.
-waiting for her to come out of the bathtroom with the test result.
-putting the fifty-second card on the top of the three foot high tower.
-telling the new tattoo artist “Let’s do it!”.
Nervous is….
A cold sweat on warm ice
A flutter at the corner of your eye
Expecting the worse and worrying about why it hasn’t happened yet
Juggling loose change with one hand and pinching your ear lobe with the other
Caring too much
Nervous is:
-waiting for those church doors to open on your wedding day
-taking your drivers test for the first time.
-waiting in the doctor’s office for test results
-your first airplane flight
-teeth marks in your #2 pencil
Nervous is…..
lives on either side, talkin’ race, religion, needs, and pride, while time ticks away and guns load.
a mom in the streets at night as her babies cry for food and lights, while a prayer floats up in the air and goes unknown.
the swiping of a plastic card though a scanner and systems where thugs try hard, to beat you to your last dime before you’re home.
telling him he’s the only one, changin’ Facebook identities to keep it fun, hoping the lithium lasts until your lie is gone.
Nervous is…
Down on one knee
His heart will dance with joy
Or his dreams destroyed
What will her answer be?
Nervous is seeing a nun with a ruler
….when that horn in your car gets stuck & you just can’t shut it of… mean while…that long line of Hells Angels that are in front you…they start to pull over…
…when your mom demands, ” Who ate half of your father’s birthday cake???? ” & your the only one there…with crumbs & icing all over your face…
…when your making love to your wife…& in the heat of passion…you mention her sister’s name….
…after you’ve put your foot in your mouth…a lamp shade goes flying past your head…
When you step up to the plate to bat….& staring you down is the pitcher they call…” Spike, (send you to the hospital ) Kowalski ”…
Nervous is tip toeing away as your little man drifts off to sleep.
Your sweetheart in something red and frilly; peeling back those sheets.
Fingers crossed…. and it’s time, for his little sister…
Those hot supple lips on yours, boy you better have the technique.
Nervous or not… you better make her burn like a cinder…
Nervous is the drips of fear that run from your armpits while you sit motionless.

Thunder quaking, The dog shaking, clouds a rolling, and God is bowling.

Fighting the trembling and still walking up to her
